In 1922, the city of Angers, with the support of the Maine-et-Loire department, inaugurated a monument "to the glory of the children of Angers and Anjou, combatants in the Great War". Entrusted to the sculptor Jules Desbois, this bronze work, with its bold, original composition, highlights the disasters of the global conflict.
This exhibition-dossier will present the history of the monument, from its commissioning to its installation, with the help of archive documents and works from Angers museums, as well as loans from the Musée de Beaux-Arts in Tours, the Musée Jules Desbois in Parçay-les-Pins and collectors.
Never-before-seen pieces will also be showcased. Three works recently donated to the Musée d'Angers will be on display: a wax sketch, the first model and a proof of the soldier's bust. For the first time, they will be brought together for the public, providing a better understanding of the various stages in the monument's creation.
