The religious complex was built between 1889 and 1891. The chapel, built on a mound to protect it from flooding by the Loire, is one of a series of high-quality buildings set around a tree-lined esplanade. On a neo-Romanesque base, the architect gave the chapel an architectural slenderness by adding columns with remarkably ornate capitals above the buttresses. Featuring stone statues on the pediment and cast-iron statues on the floor, depicting the apparitions of Our Lady to the children of La Salette, the chapel also has a path around the perimeter, depicting the 15 mysteries of the Rosary. With its stained glass windows and harmoniously decorated interior with paintings on canvas stuck to the wall, the chapel is a characteristic witness to life in the Loire Valley at the time.
