Description

A puppet show inspired by Christoph Willibald Gluck’s *Orpheus and Eurydice*. Premiered at the Théâtre national de l’Opéra-Comique on February 13, 2019 When love and death clash: Orpheus falls in love with Eurydice and marries her. But on their wedding day, the young woman is bitten by a snake and dies. Orpheus bravely sets out to retrieve his wife from the Underworld, facing monsters and Furies to find her: will he be able to bring her back from the dead without looking at her, as he promised the gods? Orpheus is the founding myth of Western opera because it shows that music and song are stronger than death, more powerful than the Underworld. Echoing Gluck’s opera (also presented this season), visual artist and director Valérie Lesort has reimagined Orpheus’s journey in a magical version for piano, voice, and puppets. A miniature opera—funny, tender, and magical—that introduces children to operatic voices and the magic of opera, while allowing adults to (re)discover this classic work in a playful format. Recommended for ages 6 and up.
