Exhibition: Kimono, Kesi, Ikat. Textiles from Asia

Asian textiles reflect a rich tradition of craftsmanship, in which often ancient techniques are used to express the diverse cultural traditions unique to each Asian country and society. Assembled primarily by former curator Henry de Morant, the Pincé Museum’s textile collection illustrates the excellence and diversity of these artistic creations. Whether intended for domestic use, clothing, or ceremonial purposes, these works reflect the available resources, aesthetic traditions, and beliefs specific to the societies that created them. In 2025, a donation enriched the Pincé Museum with a collection of Indonesian ikats, thereby expanding the range of civilizations represented in its collection. This donation serves as the starting point for an exhibition featuring textile works from other cultures, primarily Chinese and Japanese. Through a selection of fabrics, illustrations, and a few garments, this exhibition invites visitors to discover the diversity of materials and techniques used, from weaving to embroidery to dyeing. It also highlights the essential role of textiles as a medium for preserving memory and passing on traditions.
