Starting September 26, the Château d’Angers will begin a new chapter in its history with the opening to the public of the terrace at the top of the Tour du Moulin, the tallest of the fortress’s 17 towers.
After twenty years of closure and nearly five years of restoration carried out as part of the Recovery Plan, this iconic landmark of the Angers landscape is once again fulfilling its role as a watchtower overlooking the Maine River. Climbing its 83 steps takes visitors on a journey through nearly eight centuries of history before reaching, at a height of 40 meters, an exceptional 360° panoramic view of the city of Angers and its surroundings.
The visitor route has been completely redesigned. A virtual orientation table makes the experience accessible to as many people as possible, while a poetic evocation of the miller who once lived there accompanies the exploration of this unique tower. At the summit, a secure viewing platform showcases the restored 17th-century schist paving and offers a unique vantage point over the monument and its surroundings.
This reopening is also accompanied by the first-ever public opening of two other towers accessible from the castle courtyard. One offers an immersion into the medieval world of the fortress, while the other invites visitors to discover the board games played during the reign of King René.
To mark this occasion, the Château d’Angers is hosting a special evening event on Friday, September 25. At dusk, the public will be able to explore the Moulin Tower free of charge and enjoy the unique atmosphere of this rediscovered historic site.
